about

Raoul Bhaneja is a rarity on the Canadian jazz scene in that he is a vocalist, singer and entertainer. As a vocalist, he truly sells the song, has plenty of swagger and sounds both authentic and original. As a singer, well...the guy can sing! As an entertainer - there are few vocalists as likely to keep your feet-a-boppin and eyes-a-poppin. It should be no surprise the guy is brutally comfortable on stage – - he's done a one man theatre production of Hamlet for Pete's sake! From a sincere "Here's To Life" to an equally tender "A Man Ain't Supposed To Cry"; it's clear that Raoul is prepared to tackle songs rarely covered - and he also lightens up with renditions of classics such as "Teach Me Tonight" and "Crazy Rhythm".

Jesse Whiteley comes from a family so familiar to the Canadian music scene they are practically royalty. His father is blues master Chris Whiteley and his uncle is folk legend Ken Whiteley. This not only gave him a head start in music and the music business, it made him comfortable in all genres of music; particularly jazz, blues, boogie woogie, r&b and folk. As a teenager he was already performing with jazz legends such as Clark Terry, Cleo Laine, Jackie Richardson and Doc Severinson. Since then Jesse graduated with honours from the contemporary music program Humber College and then completed a Masters Degree at York University in Music composition. He's performed live across North America and is both a sideman and band leader. On this recording he certainly displays his years of hard work and virtuosity on the 88 keys.

With this project, "Blue Standard" these two brilliant artists explore classic songs in a stripped down and intimate way. This is music that works well with a lemonade...or a bourbon. It impresses both open-minded jazz aficionados and those who like their music classic and simple. While you listen to this recording; I imagine you'll want to start surfing the internet to see where they will be performing live!
